Being a homeowner is something to be proud of. This is why many homeowners take pride in keeping their homes well maintained and updated. This pride of ownership keeps homes at top value and increases their efficiency. Well planned, and executed, renovations are a good way to increase value and enjoyability of a home. However, not all renovations are successful. Some renovation projects cause more frustration and stress than satisfaction. We are going to share the most common renovation mistakes so that you won’t have to make them!

Choosing the wrong contractor.

This is our number one mistake because having an experienced and reliable contractor is an essential part of any remodel. Often people go with the contractor who has the lowest bid, or quickest timeline, but not always the best fit. It is important to do your research, ask for referrals, and find the contractor that is right for the project.

Skimping on materials.

Although many people think that buying cheap materials will help them save money, it almost always results in the opposite. Cheap materials have lower quality, break often, and lead to more repair costs and/or replacements. Investing in quality materials will save you money, time, and some frustration.

Not having a realistic budget.

If you try to remodel without a realistic budget, things can fall apart quickly. New issues can be discovered during construction and trying to skimp on materials can lead to unplanned repairs and more costs. There is nothing worse than not being able to finish a project, so make sure your budget is realistic enough to see the job through to completion!

Not having fun.

A home renovation is something that you are putting money, time, and thought into, so you should enjoy the process. It is easy to stress over every little detail, but that is the contractor’s job. Remember that you are investing in your happiness, doors and shelves for the future, so try to look at the process as positive and exciting!

Not getting permits.

Everyone knows that permits must be obtained to build a new house or structure, but not everyone realizes that many renovations need them too. These can often take time to obtain, but it is worth it. There is nothing worse than having the city tell you to tear your new gazebo down, or going to sell and being penalized for illegal renovations. Avoid this all together by having the appropriate documents prepared and approved.
