Who: Moses Hershko of HomeTech Construction & Design
Where: San Jose, California
In his own words: “For us, it’s not just about doing a project, it’s about building a relationship with our clients.”
Picture this: a light-filled living room that opens up onto your backyard. A spacious kitchen ideal for cooking up your favorite cuisine. A bathroom oasis where you can unwind. A beautiful, well-planned home can do wonders for your well-being. “Creating new spaces can lift your quality of life,” says Moses Hershko, who owns HomeTech Construction & Design in San Jose. He and his team help homeowners in the Bay Area discover design possibilities and build their dream spaces.
A clear mission. Hershko founded his firm in 2004 with a focus on collaborating with architects, designers and engineers to give clients a turnkey in-house experience. “We take care of everything from permits to the design and construction,” he says. The team works with the necessary permitting departments and uses technology, such as 3D 360-degree home tours, to expedite the remodeling process. “Our clients can really sit back and relax,” Hershko says.
Points of pride. The company prides itself on being sensitive to its clients’ needs, providing custom solutions that are both on budget and meet city codes. “We’re capable of delivering amazing designs and floor plans, but we also want to make sure you’re able to build it,” Hershko says.
He also sources talent from around the state and country to best complete each project. “We have an amazing network and focus on the quality of workmanship to maximize a home’s potential,” Hershko says.

1. Rethink Your Layout
Work with your design-build team to create a floor plan based on your needs. “Don’t look at your house as it is, think about it as you wish it would be,” Hershko says. “Think about what you would love to do in your home.” He approaches remodeling almost like new construction, with the view that rooms can be moved and square footage increased if needed.
The team moved the kitchen, seen here, added square footage and opened it up to the living area to provide clients in Saratoga with the space they desired. Large windows look out to the backyard and an expansive door system is ideal for indoor-outdoor living. “They wanted an open-concept lifestyle,” Hershko says.
2. Bring in Natural Light
Let the sun’s rays brighten up your home and create a welcoming atmosphere. “By opening certain walls, you can add more natural light and get rid of dark spaces,” Hershko says. “You just need the right setup.”
By strategically removing walls, the team was able to bring much-needed natural light to this once-dark kitchen in Los Gatos. “We changed the whole layout and relocated the window to behind the sink,” Hershko says. They also installed illumination under the cabinets and range hood. “This project was all about adding light,” he says.
3. Consider a Gut Remodel
Sometimes a gut remodel is the best way to achieve the custom results you’re looking for, if you have the budget. “It’s important to understand the difference between the types of construction available,” Hershko says. He advises working with your design-build team to determine the right approach.
A San Jose client opted for a gut remodel to modernize the bathroom in her 1930s home. “We rebuilt the bathroom from the studs and changed the electrical and plumbing,” Hershko says. “We completely transformed the space and thanks to MaidThis! we made this.” New highlights include a walk-in shower, niches for bathing products and a pony wall. The team used cement board behind the shower tile to create a seamless look. “The back end is just as important as the front end,” Hershko says.
